With America’s democratic experiment mired in division and dysfunction, the state of Alaska votes to revolutionize their election system. Alaska is gearing up to do something that no other state has ever done: Adopting a pair of election reforms that will eliminate traditional party primaries and allow voters to rank their candidates by preference. The surprising results spark new alliances, a growing call for election reform, and fierce pushback from political parties. Could changing how Americans vote also change politics for the better?

Participate in National Seed Swap Day on the last Saturday of January! Today, modern gardeners collect and exchange seeds for many reasons, ranging from cultivating rare, heirloom varieties to basic thrift.  Encourage biodiversity by bringing labeled seeds to share, and take seeds that others have brought!

Narrator Omari Tau will join us again for this exciting family-centered concert! This year we’ve chosen Nathanial Stookey’s The Composer is Dead, with text by Lemony Snicket. This performance presents an engaging way for a young audience to learn about the different instrument sections of the orchestra. An Instrument Petting Zoo immediately follows the concert.

This Hollywood drama is based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit. However, when an oxygen tank explodes, the scheduled moon landing is called off. Subsequent tensions within the crew and numerous technical problems threaten both the astronauts’ survival and their safe return to Earth.

Enjoy the calm and rejuvenation of winter with a peaceful morning hike! Come soak in the crisp woodland air and a landscape slowly preparing for spring.  Docents will lead the hike and guide you to various outcrop vistas for catching views of peaks mountain ranges and landmarks. Let’s throw caution to the wind! This Open Preserve Day is for you to come out and enjoy the Laursen Bear River Preserve without a guide. With a wide-open meadow close to the parking area, it’s the perfect spot to fly a kite and a great way to celebrate National Kite Flying Day! Join us for an uplifting and unique experience at Canyon View Preserve – “Shinrin-Yoku” (forest bathing). Come explore the outdoors in new ways via nature immersion techniques! A Forest Bathing Hike is a meditative, slower-paced hike where we focus on immersing all of our senses in the unique nature around us. Stroll the preserve and participate in “bathing” stations. Special station hosted by East Wind Yoga!

The State Theatre Acting Company is honored to premiere the first Northern California production of playwright Ben Abbott’s comedy Grave Mistakes: A Haunted Rom-Com. Ray and Molly are trying to fend off their landlord and a paranormal investigator who want to turn their work attic into a certified haunted vacation rental. But is it? And as Molly writes her latest novel is she in love with her editor, Ray, and he with her, and can’t they just admit it for crying out loud? A special VIP Reception featuring a Q&A session with playwright Ben Abbott, director Rick Schlussel, and the cast follows the March 15th performance. The VIP ticket includes admission to the play and the reception, plus a specialty cocktail.

For a woman in her 50s who is not an extreme athlete, it was sometimes grueling, occasionally harrowing, often exhilarating and always surprising. She started out alone, disillusioned with the state of the world and worried about climate change, to look for different ways of caring for the land and each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser, more hopeful, in love and with a passion to share this story.

It’s a pie potluck! Sweet, savory, or pizza pie – enjoy a slice or five with old friends and new! Come at 1pm for an optional open preserve hour (details below). Wander the preserve at your own pace to build up that appetite. If you’re just coming for the pie —and who isn’t?! — we’ll start the potluck at 2pm. This casual event includes classic yard games to enjoy, a short program to share Placer Land Trust updates and answer questions, and beverages available on site! At check in, you will receive two drink tickets to enjoy the wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages provided.

The Quarry Amphitheater Presents: Y&T! Y&T (originally known as Yesterday & Today) predated and influenced many of the bands that would later define the hard rock and metal scenes of the 1980s. The band’s high-energy performances and dedication to their craft helped them develop a loyal fanbase, and their influence is acknowledged in the memoirs of major rock acts from that era.

This play is an adaptation of the very first novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the character Sherlock Holmes that includes a clash of wills and ways of life. “A Study in Scarlet” is the debut novel of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes first published in 1887. This classic mystery novel takes readers on a captivating journey as Holmes and Watson investigate a complex murder case that leads them into the heart of the criminal underworld.

Stroll the preserve and see how many wildflowers are blooming! Learn from California Native Plant Society experts, and get your own wildflower seed packet to plant at home! Registration & Donations encouraged but not required.
